Frequently Asked Questions

  • Why are there authors that do not show any works?

In some cases there may be an author included in the BFVE who does not have a related work. This is a temporary situation and means that the record for this author has not yet been added, but soon will.

  • Why can't I search for a word within a work?

The BVFE does not search inside a work, it only indicates the location of the work. From this bibliographical directory you will not be able to find word within a specific work unless it forms part of the title or is included in the other data of the entry. You must visit the website that holds the work to make a search of the terms within the work.

  • What kind of content can I find in the BVFE?

The Biblioteca Virtual de la Filología Española contains records of digitized works in over two hundred online libraries worldwide, as well as the largest repository of digitized works of Google Books, Hathi Trust, Internet Archive, Europeana, Digital Public Library of America (DPLA), etc. All of the content has been carefully selected so that it may be used as a resource by specialists, scholars of the history of language or by those who simply wish to satisfy their curiosity.

  • Is the BVFE the owner of the content that can be accessed from the browser?

No. The Biblioteca Virtual de la Filología Española selects the locations of digital works and includes the URL addresses in its database, but does not have any proprietary rights over the content, nor is any content held in its server. When the visitor wishes to access the content they want to see, the works are shown on the original website, in a new window that is independent from the BVFE.

  • Can I download the grammars, orthographies, dictionaries, etc.?

From the Biblioteca Virtual de la Filología Española you will not be able to download works, as the BVFE does not hold any of the works on its server, nor does it have the intellectual property rights to the content. It is possible that the directory where the work is held will allow its download. However, in order to find out whether downloads are possible, the terms and conditions of each third-party site must be consulted.

  • How often is the BVFE updated?

The Biblioteca Virtual de la Filología Española is updated several times a month.

  • What kind of information will I receive if I subscribe to the BVFE?

The BVFE will send periodic newsletters with the latest additions to the directory. If there are any events of interest, news about the library or upgrades to the website, you will also be informed. The BVFE will not, under any circumstances, send advertisements or other content unrelated to our own bibliographical directory. On the other hand, subscribers can freely cancel their subscription to the BVFE whenever they wish. It is not necessary to send an email to cancel your subscription. Simply notify us via the subscription form on the bottom left of the website.

  • If I see a work that has already been digitized but is not in the BFVE, how can I tell the BVFE about it?

Just click on the red button with the dropdown + symbol on this website's header. A form will open, from which you will be able to send us the URL that you wish to add to the BVFE, with any other suggestions you may like to add.

  • I have found a mistake. How can I report it so that it can be corrected?

If you find a misprint, a broken link or a work added to an incorrect category, we would appreciate you telling us, so that we can rectify the issue. This can be done by clicking on the button "Report a mistake" that is directly underneath the details of each entry in the library. We will receive immediate notification of the exact link with the wrong reference. You may also include comments if you wish.
