Suárez de Figueroa, Cristóbal (1571-ca. 1636-1644)

Vida

Cristóbal Suárez de Figueroa nació en Valladolid en 1571, hijo de Juan Alonso Suárez, abogado, por lo que la segunda parte de su apellido es un añadido, probablemente para hacerse pasar por familiar del duque de Feria en su primera estancia italiana. Debió estudiar en el colegio de los jesuitas de su ciudad natal, y en 1588 partió a Italia en busca de mejor fortuna. Estudió Derecho en Bolonia, doctorándose en Pavía en 1594. En 1600 ejercía su profesión en Nápoles y en 1604 regresó a España por cuestiones familiares. La vida se le complicó cuando apuñaló a un caballero, por lo que se vio obligado a vivir de manera clandestina por el sur de España. En 1606 va a Madrid donde comienza una abundante producción literaria. En 1623 regresa a Italia acompañando al duque de Alba, pero tuvo problemas con la Inquisición. Falleció allí en fecha no determinada. Se le ha querido identificar, como a tantos otros, con Alonso Fernández de Avellaneda, pseudónimo del autor de la continuación del Quijote (1614). Es autor de la Plaza universal, traducción de La piazza universale di tutte le professioni del mondo de Tommaso Garzoni (1549-1589), obra con numerosas citas de autores clásicos antiguos y modernos. Ni el original italiano, ni la traducción española son un repertorio lexicográfico, por más que en su interior pueda hallarse una gran riqueza léxica. Es simplemente un tratado en el que se habla de las ciencias y las artes y de cómo se deben ejercer, que vio la luz en varias ocasiones, una de ellas ya avanzado el s. XVIII. Fue una de las fuentes manejadas en el Diccionario de Autoridades, el primero de la Real Academia Española.

The BVFE regurlaly publishes new bibliographical recordsLatest bibliographical records. Our team is constantly searching for new entries. We choose our content meticulously and verify our links regularly.

Several times a month

We add new content several times a month. We gradually add more content to existing entries, and likewise add more categories and subcategories as future needs require reclassification.

You can send any BVFE entry to a friend, partner, researcher or any person interested in history of the Spanish language. To do so, press the button "Recommend" found under each file and send the entry to an email address.

Printing bibliographical records

All of the bibliographical recordsImprimir registro de la Biblioteca Virtual de la Filología Española that are in the BVFE can be printed. Click on the "Print" button located below each record. A new window will open with the content of the file ready for printing.

Printing the works

The BVFE does not own the intellectual property rights to the entries, it only selects, organizes and indicates the sites where they are located. As such, it is impossible to print the copies from the BVFE. You must agree to the legal conditions of the websites that contain the copies.

Extensions

We are currently devising several extensions for the website. We will gradually integrate upgrades and more functions. The BVFE welcomes any suggestions that our users may have.

Submission of new URLs

Clicking on the + sign located on the dropdown tab at the top of the website Refer a URL or make a suggestion will take you to a form that has a field where you can send a URL address that has not yet been included in the BVFE. It is simple to use: just indicate the URL of the entry and we will do the rest, after completing the corresponding checks.
