Marden, Charles Carrol (1867-1932)

Charles Carroll Marden fue un filólogo medievalista estadounidense que nació el 21 de diciembre de 1867 en Baltimore (Maryland, EE. UU.) y falleció el 11 de mayo de 1932 en Princeton (Nueva Jersey, EE. UU.). Marden, tras permanecer tres años en el Baltimore City College, accedió a la Johns Hopkins University en 1886, donde obtuvo su graduado en artes en 1889. Marden fue profesor de francés y alemán en la Norfolk Academy entre 1889 y 1890. El año siguiente, el profesor estadounidense ingresó en la Universidad de Michigan como docente de francés y, en octubre de 1891, regresó a su Johns Hopkins University como estudiante de posgrado y asistente en la enseñanza de francés y español hasta 1893. Durante el verano de 1892, Marden estuvo en México recogiendo información para su tesis doctoral, que defendió en 1894. Comenzó a trabajar en la Johns Hopkins University hasta 1916, cuando se trasladó a la Universidad de Princeton para ocupar la recién creada Cátedra de español Emery L. Ford. En la Johns Hopkins University, Charles Marden debió conocer a su discípulo Frederick Courtney Tarr (1896-1939), a quien dirigió su tesis doctoral en la Universidad de Princeton, y quien le sucedió en la Cátedra Emery L. Ford tras su muerte. Charles Carroll Marden fue miembro correspondiente de la Real Academia Española desde 1907 y, en 1922, fue distinguido como caballero de la Orden de Isabel la Católica durante el reinado de Alfonso XIII (1886-1941). En torno a 1928, Charles Carroll Marden viajó a España como invitado por la Junta para Ampliación de Estudios e Investigaciones Científicas –predecesora del actual Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC)–, e impartió una conferencia el 28 de febrero en el Centro de Estudios Históricos a la que acudieron personalidades del mundo de la filología hispánica como Américo Castro (1885-1972), Ramón Menéndez Pidal (1869-1968), Amado Alonso (1896-1952) y Pedro Salinas (1891-1951).

La primera publicación de Charles Marden fue su tesis doctoral, sobre la fonología del dialecto de la Ciudad de México, The phonology of the Spanish dialect of Mexico City, que fue publicada por la Modern Language Association of America en 1896. Marden dedicó gran parte de su actividad bibliográfica a la publicación de artículos en la serie Modern Language Notes de la Modern Language Association of America, la mayoría de los cuales centraban su atención en obras de literatura medieval española. Así, artículos como «An episode in the Poema de Fernan Gonçalez» (1900), o «Notes on the text of Libre d’Apolonio I» (1903), darían paso a obras como su edición del Poema de Fernan Gonçalez. Texto crítico con introducción notas y glosario (Johns Hopkins Press, Baltimore, 1904), y como su edición del Libro de Apolonio. An old Spanish poem, cuya primera parte, de 1917, presentaba el texto y la introducción, y la segunda parte, de 1922, incluía los aspectos gramaticales, notas y un glosario final de más de un centenar de páginas. En lo que respecta a las obras de contenido lingüístico, cabe destacar la obra que Marden publicó junto a su discípulo Frederick Courtney Tarr en 1926: una gramática de enseñanza del español titulada A first Spanish grammar (1926), obra básica destinada a los estudiantes de niveles iniciales, con un menor énfasis en las explicaciones teóricas que el dedicado a los ejemplos prácticos. En lo que respecta a su colección de textos de España, la Universidad de Princeton reúne 637 documentos agrupados en dos grupos: los recopilados en torno a las ciudades de Burgos y Soria, y los recogidos en la ciudad de Alarcón, en la provincia de Cuenca. Entre los textos, en su mayoría de la época medieval, se encuentran testamentos, hipotecas, genealogías, documentos legales, y numerosos documentos pertenecientes al Marqués de Villena, Juan Fernández Pacheco y Téllez Girón (1419-1474).

The BVFE does not own the intellectual property rights to the entries, it only selects, organizes and indicates the sites where they are located. As such, it is impossible to print the copies from the BVFE. You must agree to the legal conditions of the websites that contain the copies.

We are currently devising several extensions for the website. We will gradually integrate upgrades and more functions. The BVFE welcomes any suggestions that our users may have.

Submission of new URLs
