Arias Montano, Benito (1527-1598)
Vida
Nacido en Fregenal de la Sierra (Badajoz) en 1527, Benito Arias Montano destaca por ser uno de los eruditos más importantes de su época. Fue un sacerdote, humanista, biólogo, hebraísta y escritor. Realizó sus primeros estudios de lingüística, gramática, filosofía y retórica en Sevilla, donde permaneció hasta 1548, año en el que se trasladó a Alcalá de Henares. Allí amplió sus estudios, recibió el título de bachiller en Artes y se convirtió en el primer poeta laureado por la Universidad de alcalaína. Poco después, se ordenó sacerdote y se retiró a la Peña de Alájar (Huelva) para consagrase al estudio de la Biblia. Debido a su fama como teólogo, en 1562 participó en el Concilio de Trento donde destacó por su erudición. Posteriormente, en 1566, Felipe II (1527-1598) lo nombró su capellán y le encomendó la realización de la Biblia políglota, conocida como Biblia Regia. No obstante, esta obra, que introducía innovaciones con respecto a la Biblia políglota Complutense y estaba relacionada con la Vulgata, provocó recelos por parte de la Inquisición y fue denunciada, aunque pudo publicarse en Amberes en 1572. Después de terminar este trabajo, el rey le encargó la gestión de la biblioteca del Monasterio de El Escorial. Aquí tradujo al latín el Itinerario de Benjamín de Tudela y realizó numerosos escritos sobre el Antiguo y el Nuevo Testamento, así como otros tratados filosóficos, científicos y teológicos, traducciones del hebreo y una obra poética en latín y en español. En 1584 se retiró a Sevilla donde murió, en 1598.
Si Arias Montano aparece en la BVFE es por los Communes et familiares hebraicae linguae idiotismi […], que forman parte del volumen séptimo de la Biblia Regia, editados separadamente también. Es una recopilación de expresiones hebreas de la Biblia, bajo la forma latina, y su equivalente en latín. Se ordenan alfabéticamente a partir de la voz considerada más relevante de la construcción.

The browser
Performing a search in the BVFE is very simple. Either write the word or string of words in our browser, search for a specific category, or perform an alphabetical search by choosing a letter.
Advanced filters
In addition, all of our records contain several fields. To search for a specific work by date of publication, filter by copy, printer, place of printing, etc., use the Advanced Search.

New bibliographical records
The BVFE regurlaly publishes new bibliographical records. Our team is constantly searching for new entries. We choose our content meticulously and verify our links regularly.
Several times a month
We add new content several times a month. We gradually add more content to existing entries, and likewise add more categories and subcategories as future needs require reclassification.

Sharing options
You can send any BVFE entry to a friend, partner, researcher or any person interested in history of the Spanish language. To do so, press the button "Recommend" found under each file and send the entry to an email address.

We have also included a sidebar on the left of the screen which can be used to share on social media, select the BVFE as a favourite in your web browser, etc. On tablets and phones the share option will be displayed at the bottom of the screen.

When any category of the BVFE loads, you will see an RSS icon. Clicking on it allows you to join the feed and receive updated information for the category you have subscribed to. Printing bibliographical records
All of the bibliographical records that are in the BVFE can be printed. Click on the "Print" button located below each record. A new window will open with the content of the file ready for printing.
Printing the works
The BVFE does not own the intellectual property rights to the entries, it only selects, organizes and indicates the sites where they are located. As such, it is impossible to print the copies from the BVFE. You must agree to the legal conditions of the websites that contain the copies.

Extensions
We are currently devising several extensions for the website. We will gradually integrate upgrades and more functions. The BVFE welcomes any suggestions that our users may have.
Submission of new URLs
Clicking on the + sign located on the dropdown tab at the top of the website will take you to a form that has a field where you can send a URL address that has not yet been included in the BVFE. It is simple to use: just indicate the URL of the entry and we will do the rest, after completing the corresponding checks.
