Valenzuela, Pedro Armengol, O. de M. (1843-1922)

Vida

Laureano Valenzuela Poblete nació en Coipué (pequeña localidad de la región del Maule, Chile). Realizó sus primeros estudios en Gualleco (población de la comuna de Curepto, en la región del Maule, Chile), y los continuó en Talca (capital de la región del Maule). En 1859 se trasladó a Santiago para continuar sus estudios. En 1861 ingresó en la Orden Mercedaria en la que tomó el nombre de Pedro Armengol. Nombrado bibliotecario del convento no cesó de ampliar sus conocimientos, aprendiendo latín, alemán, francés, italiano, inglés, portugués, griego, hebreo, siríaco, y así hasta veinte lenguas. Hizo la profesión de votos solemnes el año 1866, ordenándose de sacerdote en 1868. El 1869 logró los grados de lector en Filosofía, Teología y Oratoria. A finales de este año marchó a Roma para proseguir sus estudios en la Universidad Gregoriana, cursando Derecho canónico, a la vez que se interesaba por otras disciplinas. Aprovechó la estancia para visitar diversos países europeos, y Estados Unidos, antes de regresar a Chile. De nuevo en Santiago fue profesor en el colegio de la orden. Después viajó a Ecuador por indicación de la Orden, donde fue Vicario Provincial entre 1876 y 1877, hasta que el general Ignacio de Veintimilla (1828-1908, presidente de Ecuador de 1876 a 1883), con el que tuvo violentos enfrentamientos, lo expulsó del país. Instalado en Chile, Valenzuela fue nombrado Superior de Valparaíso (1877-1880) hasta que en 1880 viajó, otra vez, a Roma. Fue elegido Maestro General de la Orden de la Merced, cuando solamente contaba 37 años de edad, en un momento en que la Orden estaba en franca decadencia. Dirigió a los mercedarios desde Roma, no desde España como era habitual. Se mantuvo al frente de la Orden hasta 1911, aunque antes ya había sido nombrado obispo de Ancud (Chiloé, Chile). En 1893 creó la Congregación de Bolivia, y en 1903 comenzó su restauración en Méjico, además de promulgar en 1895 unas nuevas Constituciones. En 1916 fue nombrado arzobispo de Gangra por Benedicto XV (1854-1922, papa desde 1914). Retirado en el convento de Santiago de Chile, murió en 1922.

Valenzuela es autor de algunas obras sobre la historia de la Iglesia en Chile, de Teología y de temática religiosa, y también de alguna de filología. Dejó sin terminar el Ensayo de filología americana comparada para contribuir a la tesis de la monogénesis del lenguaje y de la especie humana, con el que pretendía demostrar el origen común de todas las lenguas habladas en el mundo, y sus relaciones de parentesco, y, a la vez, el de sus hablantes. Por el contrario, sí que vieron la luz los dos tomos del Glosario etimológico de nombres […], en el que se ocupó principalmente del origen de la onomástica chilena, dando cuenta de los topónimos y antropónimos de origen indígena, y en menor medida, de los nombres de animales y plantas, y algunos otros, afrontando los problemas que surgen en este tipo de trabajos, especialmente la escritura de aquellas voces que, por su carácter vulgar o coloquial, no han tenido representación escrita o las que representan divergencias en los textos antiguos y los modernos. En la obra, Valenzuela hace gala de sus conocimientos de araucano y otras lenguas indígenas, pero también de las lenguas clásicas y de las bíblicas, y de la geografía de su país. Para los antropónimos proporciona frecuentemente los datos de alguna persona, coetánea o no, que llevó el nombre en cuestión.

The BVFE regurlaly publishes new bibliographical recordsLatest bibliographical records. Our team is constantly searching for new entries. We choose our content meticulously and verify our links regularly.

Several times a month

We add new content several times a month. We gradually add more content to existing entries, and likewise add more categories and subcategories as future needs require reclassification.

Printing bibliographical records

Printing the works

The BVFE does not own the intellectual property rights to the entries, it only selects, organizes and indicates the sites where they are located. As such, it is impossible to print the copies from the BVFE. You must agree to the legal conditions of the websites that contain the copies.

Extensions

We are currently devising several extensions for the website. We will gradually integrate upgrades and more functions. The BVFE welcomes any suggestions that our users may have.

Submission of new URLs

Clicking on the + sign located on the dropdown tab at the top of the website Refer a URL or make a suggestion will take you to a form that has a field where you can send a URL address that has not yet been included in the BVFE. It is simple to use: just indicate the URL of the entry and we will do the rest, after completing the corresponding checks.
