Barrett, Solomon, jr. (1800-1882)

Vida

Solomon Barret Jr. fue un filólogo estadounidense que nació en el pueblo de Washington, en el estado de Massachusetts, el 1º de abril del año 1800 y falleció el 19 de noviembre de 1882 en la localidad de Madrid del estado de Nueva York. No conservamos datos acerca de la vida de Barret, aunque presumiblemente residió gran parte de su vida entre el estado de Massachusetts y el estado de Nueva York, donde fallecería, y estuvo de algún modo relacionado con la Young Men's Association of the City of Albany (capital del estado de Nueva York), pues, precisamente, dedicó uno de sus libros a esta asociación.

Una de las obras más importantes de Solomon Barret Jr. es The principles of grammar, being a compendious treatise on the languages, English, Latin, Greek, German, Spanish and French […], cuya fecha de copyright data de 1848. En la primera parte de esta obra, Barret se centra en la exposición de los principios gramaticales, fonológicos y sintácticos del inglés. A continuación, una segunda parte da cuenta de la etimología y sintaxis latina para dar paso, en tercer lugar, a la descripción del griego clásico. A lo largo de la obra, Barret compara escritos de las tres lenguas principales objeto de su estudio, inglés-latín-griego clásico, principalmente fragmentos de la Biblia, y traduce textos, oraciones y palabras a varias lenguas, como el francés o el italiano. El alemán, el francés y el español cuentan con apartados propios dentro de The principles of grammar, en los que Barret describe dichas lenguas en comparación con el inglés fundamentalmente a nivel morfológico, en lo que se refiere a aspectos de conjugación verbal, declinaciones pronominales, etc. The principles of grammar cuenta con una edición revisada publicada en 1852 en Filadelfia, que se reimprimió sin modificaciones en 1854 y 1856 en Cambridge (Massachusetts, Estados Unidos). En 1861, se publicó una nueva versión de la obra bajo el mismo título que incluía, además de un apéndice de ejercicios para la pizarra, un diccionario comercial internacional de inglés-alemán-español-francés que aparecía con pie de imprenta y título propios, aunque sin fecha de impresión: International and commercial dictionary embracing all the principal and radical words in the english, german, spanish and french languages, with many of their derivatives, mutually translated into each other (E. R. Jewet & Co., Búfalo).

Otra de las obras de Barret fue The Lingual Assistant, German, Spanish, French and English, comprising a complete set of rules for the correct pronunciation of the German, Spanish and French; a brief and comprehensive gramar, and a number of dialogues arranged as mercantile and business transactions, de la que no se ha conservado ningún ejemplar conocido, pero que aparece en varios registros bibliográficos de los Estados Unidos.

The BVFE regurlaly publishes new bibliographical recordsLatest bibliographical records. Our team is constantly searching for new entries. We choose our content meticulously and verify our links regularly.

Several times a month

We add new content several times a month. We gradually add more content to existing entries, and likewise add more categories and subcategories as future needs require reclassification.

Printing the works

The BVFE does not own the intellectual property rights to the entries, it only selects, organizes and indicates the sites where they are located. As such, it is impossible to print the copies from the BVFE. You must agree to the legal conditions of the websites that contain the copies.

Extensions

We are currently devising several extensions for the website. We will gradually integrate upgrades and more functions. The BVFE welcomes any suggestions that our users may have.

Submission of new URLs

Clicking on the + sign located on the dropdown tab at the top of the website Refer a URL or make a suggestion will take you to a form that has a field where you can send a URL address that has not yet been included in the BVFE. It is simple to use: just indicate the URL of the entry and we will do the rest, after completing the corresponding checks.
