Barrientos, Bartolomé (ca. 1520-1580)

Vida

Bartolomé Barrientos fue un humanista que nació en Granada hacia 1520 y murió en 1580. No se tienen muchos datos acerca de su vida ni se conoce con exactitud cuál fue su relevancia en el mundo intelectual y universitario del siglo XVI, pero se cree que gozó de gran importancia. Fue catedrático de la Universidad de Salamanca, ciudad en la que se sabe que desarrolló principalmente su actividad académica, sobre todo a partir de 1550. Fue también nombrado maestro de artes por la Universidad de Zaragoza a partir de 1569. En Salamanca fue profesor de gramática desde 1552, enseñando principalmente latín, y consiguió una regencia, también de gramática, desde 1562 a 1574. Nicolás Antonio asegura que fue asimismo catedrático de matemáticas, aunque no es seguro sí es muy probable, debido a que escribió obras en las que era necesario el conocimiento de dicha materia. Fue detenido por la Inquisición en 1572 a raíz de su afición por la magia y la astrología, pero rápidamente fue puesto en libertad.

Un aspecto especialmente destacado de Barrientos lo constituye su biblioteca: tras su muerte se hizo un inventario en el que se recogieron unos quinientos libros, de gran variedad temática. En ella hay, principalmente, clásicos griegos y latinos, pero también crónicas de historia antigua y moderna, libros sobre historia natural, geografía, retórica, religión, teología y derecho, manuales de gramática o diccionarios; sin embargo, entre los títulos no hay ningún libro de entretenimiento. Los idiomas principales de los textos son el latín y el griego; hay tres obras en hebreo, entre las que se incluyen un alfabeto y un manual de gramática, y escasos libros en lenguas romances: en castellano, en italiano y uno en portugués. También se sabe que llevó a cabo una labor como dramaturgo, pero no se conservan testimonios escritos. Se cree que muchos de estos textos fueron usados por el humanista con sus alumnos durante sus clases en la universidad.

Fue autor de una docena de obras, de entre las cuales siete fueron impresas. Su publicación se concentra en torno a 1570. Sobresale su Synonymorum liber liberalium, en el que se introducen en orden alfabético distintos lemas en castellano, ya sean sustantivos, adjetivos, verbos, adverbios, expresiones y frases hechas…, y se presentan su traducción y sus sinónimos en latín.

Otra de sus obras más destacadas es el Syntaxeos liber. Barrientos se sitúa en el grupo de gramáticos tradicionales, que siguen a Nebrija y se alejan de autores como el Brocense. Así, en Syntaxeos liber se centra principalmente en presentar una gramática normativa: analiza reglas de régimen y los tipos de verbos.

Several times a month

We add new content several times a month. We gradually add more content to existing entries, and likewise add more categories and subcategories as future needs require reclassification.

The BVFE does not own the intellectual property rights to the entries, it only selects, organizes and indicates the sites where they are located. As such, it is impossible to print the copies from the BVFE. You must agree to the legal conditions of the websites that contain the copies.

Submission of new URLs
