Barros Grez, Daniel (1834-1904)

Vida

Daniel Barros Grez nació en 1834, en la provincia chilena de Colchagua (actual región de Bernardo O´Higgins) y murió en Talca (valle central de Chile) en 1904. Hijo de don Manuel Barros y de doña Concepción Grez, realizó sus estudios de enseñanza media en el Instituto Nacional (Santiago) y se tituló de Ingeniero Civil por la Universidad de Chile en 1850. Diez años después ingresó como profesor a la Facultad de Ciencias Físicas y Matemáticas de esta misma universidad, ocasión en la que leyó su discurso –como se estilaba en esa época– Modo de estudiar la naturaleza, que se publicó en los Anales de dicha casa de estudios. Combinó su carrera de ingeniero con su pasión por la escritura, convirtiéndose en uno de los más importantes fabulistas que haya tenido Chile. Fue autor de una variada producción literaria y científica. Como producto de sus estudios topográficos, en 1862 publicó Procedimiento para copiar planos y, posteriormente, su Tratado de topografía y Excepciones de la Naturaleza. En 1875 se premió su invento mecánico para distribuir las aguas de regadío. En 1885 fue llamado a dotar de agua potable a la ciudad de Guayaquil, por expresa petición del gobierno de Ecuador.

En el campo de las letras, la obra del autor fue bastante variada e incluyó la novela, la comedia y el cuento. En 1864 el Ministerio de Educación adoptó como texto de lectura una de sus más importantes obras, Colección de fábulas originales, admirada y muy elogiada en su época por su originalidad y su personal estilo. En 1888 completó esta con un nuevo libro de fábulas originales, que incluía más de 300 obras de ese género. En 1873 su trayectoria lo había llevado a formar parte de la Academia de Bellas Letras. Escribió también un buen número de comedias, con las que renovó el interés por el teatro en el Chile de la época. Especial mención cabe hacer de Cada oveja con su pareja (1879), Ir por lana... (1880), Como en Santiago (1881), El vividor (1885), obras que se han representado continuamente, y con igual éxito, en el Chile actual. Como novelista, nos ha legado Mundo, demonio y carne (1866), en realidad un diálogo literario; Pipiolos y pelucones (1876), folletín de carácter político y de gran extensión; Las aventuras de Cuatro Remos (1898), que le ocupó ocho tomos; y La chingana (1902). Es autor también del libro Cuentos para los niños grandes (1868). Fue conocido y valorado igualmente como un notable articulista.

Si bien toda su obra está teñida de color local y puede calificarse de costumbrista, es en El huérfano (1881) donde nos encontramos con un registro importante de refranes y dichos populares del habla nacional, posiblemente el punto de partida de su publicación posterior, Dichos y refranes chilenos, de 1883. A esta obra le sigue otra, que, desgraciadamente, quedó inconclusa, el Diccionario enciclopédico etimológico, parcialmente publicado en «La Lectura» y en la revista «Artes y Letras» de El Mercurio, año 1884. De fecha muy anterior (1877) es otra de las incursiones filológicas del autor: se trata de sus Observaciones sobre el verbo ‘hacer’, donde se analizan aspectos semánticos y sintácticos de esta unidad con la maestría de un lingüista. Dedicó sus últimos años a escribir en la prensa. Por la riqueza y variedad de su obra, Daniel Barros Grez puede considerarse como el escritor más conocido y leído de su época.
