Bello, Francisco (1817-1845)

Vida

Hijo del célebre Andrés Bello (1781-1865) y de su primera mujer, Mary Ann Boyland (1794-1821), Francisco Bello y Boyland nació en Londres en 1817. En 1829 se trasladó a Santiago de Chile junto a su padre, donde culminó la formación que había iniciado en la capital inglesa. Por su dedicación al estudio del latín, ganó la oposición a la cátedra de Latinidad del Instituto Nacional en 1835. En 1839 obtuvo su título de abogado y, poco tiempo después, fue nombrado miembro académico de la Facultad de Leyes y Ciencias Políticas. También lo fue de la Facultad de Humanidades, así como secretario de la Cámara de Senadores. Enfermo de tuberculosis, falleció en Santiago de Chile en 1845.

Francisco Bello dio a la imprenta su Gramática de la lengua latina en 1838. La división de la obra es tripartita –Analogía, Sintaxis y Prosodia–, en la que se subsumen varios capítulos donde se desarrollan las reglas acompañadas de advertencias o notas para ampliar el contenido o facilitar la adquisición de la teoría. En pro del didactismo, incluye ejemplos tomados de autores clásicos seguidos de su traducción al español. La segunda edición de esta Gramática (2 vols., Imprenta Chilena, Santiago de Chile, 1846-1847) vio la luz al cuidado del padre del fallecido Francisco, Andrés Bello. Para la tercera (2 vols., Imprenta Chilena, Santiago de Chile, 1854), Andrés Bello se asoció con Luis Antonio Vendel-Heyl (1786-1855). Justo Florián Lobeck (1816-1869) publicó otras dos ediciones de su obra: la Gramática de la lengua latina (Librería Española de P. Yuste, Santiago de Chile, 1863) y su Prosodia y métrica latinas, destinada a los alumnos del Instituto Nacional de Chile. Esta última está dividida en dos partes de acuerdo con el título de la obra: en la primera se tratan las cuestiones prosódicas de la lengua latina con apoyo de la ejemplificación, cuya riqueza es aumentada por el editor; en la segunda, reservada a la versificación en latín, Lobeck adecua el contenido original a las recientes investigaciones sobre la materia. En su faceta de poeta escribió composiciones como Canción a la bandera de Chile (Imprenta del Mercurio, Santiago de Chile, 1860). Asimismo, colaboró con la prensa del momento: El Museo de Ambas Américas y El Semanario de Santiago, entre otras.

The browser

Performing a search in the BVFE is very simple. Either write the word or string of words in our browser, search for a specific category, or perform an alphabetical search by choosing a letter.

The BVFE regurlaly publishes new bibliographical recordsLatest bibliographical records. Our team is constantly searching for new entries. We choose our content meticulously and verify our links regularly.

Several times a month

We add new content several times a month. We gradually add more content to existing entries, and likewise add more categories and subcategories as future needs require reclassification.

Printing bibliographical records

All of the bibliographical recordsImprimir registro de la Biblioteca Virtual de la Filología Española that are in the BVFE can be printed. Click on the "Print" button located below each record. A new window will open with the content of the file ready for printing.

Printing the works

The BVFE does not own the intellectual property rights to the entries, it only selects, organizes and indicates the sites where they are located. As such, it is impossible to print the copies from the BVFE. You must agree to the legal conditions of the websites that contain the copies.

Extensions

We are currently devising several extensions for the website. We will gradually integrate upgrades and more functions. The BVFE welcomes any suggestions that our users may have.

Submission of new URLs

Clicking on the + sign located on the dropdown tab at the top of the website Refer a URL or make a suggestion will take you to a form that has a field where you can send a URL address that has not yet been included in the BVFE. It is simple to use: just indicate the URL of the entry and we will do the rest, after completing the corresponding checks.
