Ciudad Real, Antonio de, O. F. M. (1551-1617)
Vida
Antonio de Ciudad Real nació en Ciudad Real (España) en 1551. Se formó con los franciscanos en el convento toledano de San Juan de los Reyes. Allí, después de estudiar Latinidad y Filosofía, recibió las órdenes sacerdotales en 1566. Viajó a Yucatán en 1573 con su compañero de orden Diego de Landa (1524-1589), gran conocedor del mundo maya, quien había sido designado obispo de esa diócesis. Desembarcados en Campeche, pusieron rumbo a Mérida de Yucatán, donde se establecieron. En esa ciudad, fray Antonio entró en contacto con la cultura maya, cuya lengua aprendió a la perfección. Entre 1584 y 1589 acompañó al provincial de la orden en la Nueva España, Alonso Ponce de León (¿segunda mitad del s. XVI?) en su visita a todos los conventos franciscanos del Virreinato; al término de este periplo, ambos religiosos regresaron a España. Muerto Ponce, fray Antonio regresó a Yucatán, donde fue elegido provincial y vivió numerosos conflictos con el poder civil y los encomenderos. Murió Antonio de Ciudad Real el 5 de julio de 1617.
Cuenta Eguiara y Eguren en su Biblioteca Mexicana que, de los 51 años de profesión religiosa, fray Antonio dedicó 43 a la elaboración de un gran diccionario en seis volúmenes, titulado Calepino de la lengua maya (llamado Calepino de Motul, por el lugar en el que se halló el manuscrito), que nunca pasó a las prensas. A mediados del s. XVIII existía la constancia de que se conservaban dos copias de esta obra: la primera en la biblioteca madrileña de la casa del Infantado, y la segunda –en pésimas condiciones de conservación– en la biblioteca del convento de Mérida donde fray Antonio pasó gran parte de su vida (en la BVFE registramos el ejemplar de The John Carter Brown Library). Parece que este religioso compuso, a partir de los materiales reunidos para su Calepino, dos obras lexicográficas más breves, el Diccionario castellano-yucateco y el Diccionario yucateco-castellano. El Calepino ha sido editado modernamente en tres volúmenes por el profesor del Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia de México, Ramón Arzápalo Marín.

The browser
Performing a search in the BVFE is very simple. Either write the word or string of words in our browser, search for a specific category, or perform an alphabetical search by choosing a letter.

In addition, all of our records contain several fields. To search for a specific work by date of publication, filter by copy, printer, place of printing, etc., use the Advanced Search.

New bibliographical records
The BVFE regurlaly publishes new bibliographical records. Our team is constantly searching for new entries. We choose our content meticulously and verify our links regularly.
Several times a month
We add new content several times a month. We gradually add more content to existing entries, and likewise add more categories and subcategories as future needs require reclassification.

Sharing options
You can send any BVFE entry to a friend, partner, researcher or any person interested in history of the Spanish language. To do so, press the button "Recommend" found under each file and send the entry to an email address.

We have also included a sidebar on the left of the screen which can be used to share on social media, select the BVFE as a favourite in your web browser, etc. On tablets and phones the share option will be displayed at the bottom of the screen.

When any category of the BVFE loads, you will see an RSS icon. Clicking on it allows you to join the feed and receive updated information for the category you have subscribed to. Printing bibliographical records
All of the bibliographical records that are in the BVFE can be printed. Click on the "Print" button located below each record. A new window will open with the content of the file ready for printing.
Printing the works
The BVFE does not own the intellectual property rights to the entries, it only selects, organizes and indicates the sites where they are located. As such, it is impossible to print the copies from the BVFE. You must agree to the legal conditions of the websites that contain the copies.

Extensions
We are currently devising several extensions for the website. We will gradually integrate upgrades and more functions. The BVFE welcomes any suggestions that our users may have.
Submission of new URLs
Clicking on the + sign located on the dropdown tab at the top of the website will take you to a form that has a field where you can send a URL address that has not yet been included in the BVFE. It is simple to use: just indicate the URL of the entry and we will do the rest, after completing the corresponding checks.
