Clemente y Rubio, Simón de Rojas (1777-1827)

Simón de Rojas Cosme Damián Clemente y Rubio fue un reconocido botánico español. Nació en Titaguas (Valencia) el año de 1777 en el seno de una familia numerosa. A los diez años de edad, inició su carrera eclesiástica en el Seminario de Segorbe (Castellón). Tras estudiar Humanidades durante cuatro años, se instaló en Valencia, donde estudió Filosofía y obtuvo el grado de maestro en Artes. Asimismo, destacó en el estudio de la lengua griega, latina, árabe y hebrea. Sin embargo, la carrera eclesiástica no le interesaba, por lo que la abandonó y se dedicó a su formación científica. En 1800, se traslado a Madrid para opositar a las cátedras de Lógica y Ética en el Seminario de Nobles. A pesar de no conseguir el puesto, le asignaron sustituciones en el Colegio de San Isidro. Aprovechó su estancia en Madrid para asistir a clases de árabe, botánica, mineralogía y química, lo que le permitió conocer a figuras como Casimiro Gómez Ortega (1741-1818) y Mariano Lagasca (1776-1839). En 1802 fue nombrado profesor de la cátedra de árabe. Fue entonces cuando conoció a Domingo Badía y Leblich (1767-1818) con quien viajo a Francia e Inglaterra, por lo que entró en contacto con botánicos de estos países. Asimismo, Manuel Godoy (1767-1851) le encargó una misión de espionaje en el norte de África. A su vuelta, Godoy le propuso realizar un estudio sobre la historia natural del Reino de Granada, por lo que recorrió Granada durante casi dos años recogiendo muestras de plantas y observando la adecuación de cada planta al medio natural. De igual forma, escribió obras como el Ensayo sobre las variedades de la vida común que vegetan en Andalucía (1807). Entre 1821 y 1826, tras haber participado en ciertos acontecimientos políticos, vivió en su Titaguas natal, y Madrid, donde siguió compilando datos para la Historia civil, natural y eclesiástica de Titaguas. De esta obra conservamos también un borrador parcial manuscrito titulado Apuntes para un diccionario, que contiene una lista de voces anticuadas, corrompidas o extrañas a las españolas que se utilizan en Titaguas, palabras que se pronuncian de forma alterada, vocablos propios con acepciones diferentes en español estándar, así como tecnicismos de agronomía no usuales en el español, sin olvidar valencianismos y aragonesismos.

The browser
Performing a search in the BVFE is very simple. Either write the word or string of words in our browser, search for a specific category, or perform an alphabetical search by choosing a letter.
Advanced filters
In addition, all of our records contain several fields. To search for a specific work by date of publication, filter by copy, printer, place of printing, etc., use the Advanced Search.

New bibliographical records
The BVFE regurlaly publishes new bibliographical records. Our team is constantly searching for new entries. We choose our content meticulously and verify our links regularly.
Several times a month
We add new content several times a month. We gradually add more content to existing entries, and likewise add more categories and subcategories as future needs require reclassification.

Sharing options
You can send any BVFE entry to a friend, partner, researcher or any person interested in history of the Spanish language. To do so, press the button "Recommend" found under each file and send the entry to an email address.

We have also included a sidebar on the left of the screen which can be used to share on social media, select the BVFE as a favourite in your web browser, etc. On tablets and phones the share option will be displayed at the bottom of the screen.

When any category of the BVFE loads, you will see an RSS icon. Clicking on it allows you to join the feed and receive updated information for the category you have subscribed to. If your browser does not allow you to subscribe to an RSS source, you may need to install a plugin. You can also subscribe via RSS to receive updates directly in your email. Printing bibliographical records
All of the bibliographical records that are in the BVFE can be printed. Click on the "Print" button located below each record. A new window will open with the content of the file ready for printing.
Printing the works
The BVFE does not own the intellectual property rights to the entries, it only selects, organizes and indicates the sites where they are located. As such, it is impossible to print the copies from the BVFE. You must agree to the legal conditions of the websites that contain the copies.

Extensions
We are currently devising several extensions for the website. We will gradually integrate upgrades and more functions. The BVFE welcomes any suggestions that our users may have.
Submission of new URLs
Clicking on the + sign located on the dropdown tab at the top of the website will take you to a form that has a field where you can send a URL address that has not yet been included in the BVFE. It is simple to use: just indicate the URL of the entry and we will do the rest, after completing the corresponding checks.
