Conkling, Alfred Ronald (1850–1917)

Vida

Alfred Ronald Conkling nació y murió en Nueva York. Dedicó su vida a la política republicana y al derecho. De su ámbito personal, son pocos los datos que podemos recoger hoy en día, más allá de su matrimonio con Ethel Eastman Johnson Conkling (1870-¿?) y de su suicidio, en Manhattan, en 1917.

Conkling perteneció a una familia con dos generaciones vinculadas a la política republicana estadounidense. Tal tradición lo llevó a graduarse en Leyes en Yale en 1870 y a convertirse en abogado asistente del gobierno en 1881. No obstante, no gozó de la misma importancia que sus ancestros en lo que respecta a su carrera política, pues su candidatura republicana al congreso de 1884 no fue satisfactoria. Aun así, fue miembro de la asamblea del séptimo condado de Nueva York en 1892, lo que le llevaría a publicar City government in the United States (D. Appleton and company, Nueva York, 1894). Con esta obra pretendió guiar el pensamiento de los ciudadanos en lo concerniente a su destino dentro de la municipalidad. También de índole política es la obra biográfica en honor a su padre The life and letters of Roscoe Conkling, orator, statesman, advocate (C. L. Webster & Company, Nueva York, 1889), donde describe su vida como congresista y orador de EE. UU..

Continuó sus estudios en Harvard y en Berlín, y cuando volvió a EE.UU. obtuvo empleo en el Servicio Geológico de EE.UU. Fruto de tal empleo nació su primera obra Appleton’s guide to Mexico, including a chapter on Guatemala and an English-Spanish vocabulary, publicada en 1884. El propio autor viajó allí profesionalmente en el invierno y la primavera de ese mismo año y así constituyó una completa guía de viajes que contenía toda la información necesaria sobre el territorio político y geológico, precios, acomodación, comercio, ruinas antiguas, costumbres mexicanas, y un apéndice de vocabulario y lenguaje español. La obra volvería a imprimirse en 1891.

The BVFE regurlaly publishes new bibliographical recordsLatest bibliographical records. Our team is constantly searching for new entries. We choose our content meticulously and verify our links regularly.

Several times a month

We add new content several times a month. We gradually add more content to existing entries, and likewise add more categories and subcategories as future needs require reclassification.

Sharing options

You can send any BVFE entry to a friend, partner, researcher or any person interested in history of the Spanish language. To do so, press the button "Recommend" found under each file and send the entry to an email address.

Printing bibliographical records

All of the bibliographical recordsImprimir registro de la Biblioteca Virtual de la Filología Española that are in the BVFE can be printed. Click on the "Print" button located below each record. A new window will open with the content of the file ready for printing.

Printing the works

The BVFE does not own the intellectual property rights to the entries, it only selects, organizes and indicates the sites where they are located. As such, it is impossible to print the copies from the BVFE. You must agree to the legal conditions of the websites that contain the copies.

Extensions

We are currently devising several extensions for the website. We will gradually integrate upgrades and more functions. The BVFE welcomes any suggestions that our users may have.

Submission of new URLs

Clicking on the + sign located on the dropdown tab at the top of the website Refer a URL or make a suggestion will take you to a form that has a field where you can send a URL address that has not yet been included in the BVFE. It is simple to use: just indicate the URL of the entry and we will do the rest, after completing the corresponding checks.
