Halse, Edward (1854-1935)

Vida

Hijo del escultor George F. Halse, Edward Halse nació en 1854 y se educó en el King’s College de Londres. En 1873 se matriculó en el Royal School of Mines graduándose en Metalurgia en 1875. Entre 1877 y 1884 trabajó en las minas de Merionethshire (Gales) y como asesor en minas de manganeso en Cerdeña. En 1888 se trasladó a Colombia donde dirigió la mina de oro de Silencio en Tolima informando de depósitos de oro y mercurio, y entre 1889-1890 dirigió varias minas de oro en África Occidental. También trabajó en minas de México y Australia Occidental. En 1897 regresó a Colombia y ocupó la dirección de las minas de oro de Sucre, puesto que desempeñaría hasta 1906, año en el que regresa a Inglaterra desde donde trabaja como consultor para minas de Gran Bretaña, Italia, Asia Menor y España. Falleció en Twickenham en 1935.

Contribuyó con sus artículos en diferentes sociedades científica dando cuenta de su sólido conocimiento sobre minería. En 1908 compiló A dictionary of Spanish and Spanish-American mining, metallurgical and allied terms to which some Portuguese and Portuguese-American (Brazilian) terms are added. Aunque las entradas están en español, el diccionario está escrito en inglés, sin embargo y como el propio autor indica, utiliza numerosas referencias cruzadas para hacer que la obra sea lo más útil posible. Dentro de los artículos se incluyen términos españoles e ilustraciones. Halse recoge algunos sinónimos y equivalentes en francés, alemán o portugués. En el prólogo del diccionario el autor menciona y da las gracias a todos los autores del campo de la minería y la metalurgia de los que se ha servido para llevar a cabo la redacción del diccionario donde también incluye voces provinciales de México y Colombia, países en los que trabajó durante varios años. El diccionario volvió a reeditarse en 1914. Es un interesantísimo diccionario tanto para expertos como para interesados en la minería, pues cumple el objetivo que el autor se marcó, es decir ser una obra útil y fácil de manejar a pesar de ser también bastante prolija.

The browser

Performing a search in the BVFE is very simple. Either write the word or string of words in our browser, search for a specific category, or perform an alphabetical search by choosing a letter.

The BVFE regurlaly publishes new bibliographical recordsLatest bibliographical records. Our team is constantly searching for new entries. We choose our content meticulously and verify our links regularly.

Several times a month

We add new content several times a month. We gradually add more content to existing entries, and likewise add more categories and subcategories as future needs require reclassification.

Sharing options

You can send any BVFE entry to a friend, partner, researcher or any person interested in history of the Spanish language. To do so, press the button "Recommend" found under each file and send the entry to an email address.

Printing bibliographical records

All of the bibliographical recordsImprimir registro de la Biblioteca Virtual de la Filología Española that are in the BVFE can be printed. Click on the "Print" button located below each record. A new window will open with the content of the file ready for printing.

Printing the works

The BVFE does not own the intellectual property rights to the entries, it only selects, organizes and indicates the sites where they are located. As such, it is impossible to print the copies from the BVFE. You must agree to the legal conditions of the websites that contain the copies.

Extensions

We are currently devising several extensions for the website. We will gradually integrate upgrades and more functions. The BVFE welcomes any suggestions that our users may have.

Submission of new URLs

Clicking on the + sign located on the dropdown tab at the top of the website Refer a URL or make a suggestion will take you to a form that has a field where you can send a URL address that has not yet been included in the BVFE. It is simple to use: just indicate the URL of the entry and we will do the rest, after completing the corresponding checks.
