Icíar, Juan de (ca. 1523-ca. 1572)
Vida
Juan de Icíar fue un calígrafo y maestro vasco del siglo XVI. Nació en Durango (Vizcaya) a principios de la década de 1520. Se asentó en Zaragoza, donde se consagró a la enseñanza en la escuela pública que allí abrió y a la composición de obras tanto pedagógicas como litúrgicas. Antes de fallecer, hacia 1572, se ordenó sacerdote en Logroño.
Su Recopilación subtilíssima, intitulada Ortographía práctica […] fue su obra cumbre. Se considera la primera muestra de letra bastarda española, así como la primera obra destinada a la adquisición de contenidos teóricos y prácticos en materia escrituraria. Este arte de escribir, destinado a servir de manual para los maestros de primera educación, se reimprimió en varias ocasiones a lo largo del siglo XVI. La segunda edición de 1550 (Pedro Bernuz, Zaragoza) presentaba modificaciones en el título, Arte subtilíssima […], que apuntaba añadidos por parte del autor. A partir de la cuarta edición (Esteban de Nájera, Zaragoza, 1555), se suprimió buena parte del contenido teórico y, por último, en la quinta (Esteban de Nájera, Zaragoza, 1559), además de modificarse nuevamente el título, Libro subtilíssimo […], se incluyó su Aritmética. Esta última, que ya se había publicado unos años atrás, contenía las nociones básicas sobre la materia que se impartía en las aulas de educación primaria. También se cree que la sección dedicada a la aritmética pudo ser obra de Juan Gutiérrez de Gualda (¿?-1531-¿?), ya que esta se refundió con la de Icíar en su sexta edición (viuda de Bartolomé de Nájera, Zaragoza, 1564): «Arte breue y prouechoso de cuenta castellana y arithmética, donde se muestran las cinco reglas de guarismo por la cuenta castellana, y reglas de memoria». Muy vinculado con su arte de escribir pero destinado a un público distinto es el Nueuo estilo descreuir cartas mensageras […]. Este tratado se propone instruir en el arte epistolar y contiene diversos modelos según el destinatario y el asunto.

- Libro intitulado Arithmética práctica, muy útil y prouechoso para toda persona que quissiere exercitarse en aprender a contar, Pedro Bernuz, Zaragoza, 1549.
- Libro subtilíssimo por el qual se enseña a escreuir y contar perfectamente; el qual lleua el mesmo orden que lleua vn maestro con su discípulo, Esteban de Nájera, Zaragoza, 1559.
- Nueuo estillo d’escreuir cartas mensageras sobre diuersas materias, Agustín Millán, Zaragoza, 1552.
- Recopilación subtilíssima, intitulada Ortographía práctica, por la qual se enseña a escreuir perfectamente, ansí por práctica como por geometría todas las suertes de letras que más en nuestra España y fuera della se vsan, Bartolomé de Nájera, Zaragoza, 1548.

The browser
Performing a search in the BVFE is very simple. Either write the word or string of words in our browser, search for a specific category, or perform an alphabetical search by choosing a letter.
Advanced filters
In addition, all of our records contain several fields. To search for a specific work by date of publication, filter by copy, printer, place of printing, etc., use the Advanced Search.

New bibliographical records
The BVFE regurlaly publishes new bibliographical records. Our team is constantly searching for new entries. We choose our content meticulously and verify our links regularly.
Several times a month
We add new content several times a month. We gradually add more content to existing entries, and likewise add more categories and subcategories as future needs require reclassification.

Sharing options
You can send any BVFE entry to a friend, partner, researcher or any person interested in history of the Spanish language. To do so, press the button "Recommend" found under each file and send the entry to an email address.

We have also included a sidebar on the left of the screen which can be used to share on social media, select the BVFE as a favourite in your web browser, etc. On tablets and phones the share option will be displayed at the bottom of the screen.

Printing bibliographical records
All of the bibliographical records that are in the BVFE can be printed. Click on the "Print" button located below each record. A new window will open with the content of the file ready for printing.
Printing the works
The BVFE does not own the intellectual property rights to the entries, it only selects, organizes and indicates the sites where they are located. As such, it is impossible to print the copies from the BVFE. You must agree to the legal conditions of the websites that contain the copies.

Extensions
We are currently devising several extensions for the website. We will gradually integrate upgrades and more functions. The BVFE welcomes any suggestions that our users may have.
Submission of new URLs
Clicking on the + sign located on the dropdown tab at the top of the website will take you to a form that has a field where you can send a URL address that has not yet been included in the BVFE. It is simple to use: just indicate the URL of the entry and we will do the rest, after completing the corresponding checks.
