Vida
El padre Thiel fue un religioso lazarista, obispo, misionero, lingüista e historiador nacido en 1850 la ciudad industrial de Elberfeld (Renania del Norte-Westfalia, Alemania) en el seno de una familia burguesa de orígenes campesinos. Huérfano de madre desde los seis años, creció en un ambiente filantrópico en el que se le inculcó la importancia de la ayuda al necesitado y en el que la mentalidad y personalidad del sacerdote –hoy beato– Adolfo Kölping (1813-1865) desempeñó un papel trascendental. Thiel cursó sus estudios de bachillerato en el convento de San Vicente de Paúl de la cercana ciudad de Neuss (Renania del Norte-Westfalia, Alemania), y en esa institución lazarista se ordenó sacerdote en 1874. Los paúles realizaban en aquel momento una importante labor misionera en Hispanoamérica. Esta realidad, junto con la persecución que comenzó a sufrir la Iglesia católica en Alemania –movimiento denominado Kulturkampf, encabezado por Otto von Bismark (1815-1898) e inserto en la tendencia a la unificación cultural y religiosa del recién unificado Imperio alemán– impulsó a nuestro autor a cruzar el Atlántico para emprender una nueva vida. Su primer destino fue el seminario de Quito, donde permaneció por espacio de tres años (1874-1877); al término de este trienio, y tras una serie de sucesos que forzaron la decisión –asesinato del presidente del país en 1875 y muerte por envenenamiento del arzobispo de Quito en 1877–, las órdenes religiosas fueron expulsadas de Ecuador y Thiel se trasladó a Costa Rica. A los dos años de su llegada, y gracias a su calidad de extranjero y al prestigio adquirido –pese a contar solo con 30 años–, fue escogido para desempeñar el cargo de obispo de San José de Costa Rica, puesto que estaba vacante debido al enfrentamiento entre el Gobierno y la Iglesia en esa república centroamericana: Thiel ocupó la sede desde 1880 hasta 1901. Estos 20 años estuvieron marcados por la ayuda a los necesitados –introdujo en el país la doctrina social de la Iglesia– y los incesantes viajes por todos los rincones del país, lo que le brindó la posibilidad de entrar en contacto con las comunidades indígenas de todo el territorio costarricense. Murió prematuramente con solo 50 años, fue declarado Benemérito de la Patria en 1921 por el Gobierno costarricense y es considerado uno de los inspiradores de la Teología de la Liberación.
Su labor filológica se centra en el estudio del léxico de lenguas amerindias de Costa Rica, aún no trabajadas ni descritas en aquel momento (finales del s. XIX).

The browser
Performing a search in the BVFE is very simple. Either write the word or string of words in our browser, search for a specific category, or perform an alphabetical search by choosing a letter.
Advanced filters
In addition, all of our records contain several fields. To search for a specific work by date of publication, filter by copy, printer, place of printing, etc., use the Advanced Search.

New bibliographical records
The BVFE regurlaly publishes new bibliographical records. Our team is constantly searching for new entries. We choose our content meticulously and verify our links regularly.
Several times a month
We add new content several times a month. We gradually add more content to existing entries, and likewise add more categories and subcategories as future needs require reclassification.

Sharing options
You can send any BVFE entry to a friend, partner, researcher or any person interested in history of the Spanish language. To do so, press the button "Recommend" found under each file and send the entry to an email address.

We have also included a sidebar on the left of the screen which can be used to share on social media, select the BVFE as a favourite in your web browser, etc. On tablets and phones the share option will be displayed at the bottom of the screen.

When any category of the BVFE loads, you will see an RSS icon. Clicking on it allows you to join the feed and receive updated information for the category you have subscribed to. Printing bibliographical records
All of the bibliographical records that are in the BVFE can be printed. Click on the "Print" button located below each record. A new window will open with the content of the file ready for printing.
Printing the works
The BVFE does not own the intellectual property rights to the entries, it only selects, organizes and indicates the sites where they are located. As such, it is impossible to print the copies from the BVFE. You must agree to the legal conditions of the websites that contain the copies.

Extensions
We are currently devising several extensions for the website. We will gradually integrate upgrades and more functions. The BVFE welcomes any suggestions that our users may have.
Submission of new URLs
Clicking on the + sign located on the dropdown tab at the top of the website will take you to a form that has a field where you can send a URL address that has not yet been included in the BVFE. It is simple to use: just indicate the URL of the entry and we will do the rest, after completing the corresponding checks.
